Working with purposefully restrictive processes and traditional materials I make large-scale, non-objective paintings. Through my work, I have developed a basic vocabulary of motifs and approaches to mark-making that tend to re-emerge as essential tools for what is ultimately an inquiry and celebration of the visual.
The essence of my approach to painting is about creating situations through which I can experience a process of learning. Improvisational and often heavily revised, my work is driven by the curiosity and possibilities of "what if?". At times my paintings begin from a conceptual basis, while at others they are built from formal ideas. In either event, as they develop, I am continually pushing myself and the paintings toward uncertainty and vulnerability.
